US Army Special Forces: Black Hawk Fast Rope Insertion Footage

U.S. Army Special Forces use the Fast Rope Insertion Extraction System (FRIES) with Black Hawk helicopters in Stuttgart, Germany on August 19, 2016.

Fast Rope Insertion Extraction System (FRIES), is a technique for descending a thick rope. It is useful for deploying troops from a helicopter in places where the helicopter itself cannot touch down. Fast roping is particularly useful for marines, who can use the technique to board ships at sea as well as to reach destinations on land. First developed by the British with UK rope manufacturer Marlow Ropes, its first combat use was during the Falklands War.

The original rope was a thick nylon that could be used in a manner akin to a firepole. The special ropes used today are braided (plaited), which results in a pattern on the outer circumference that is not smooth and so is easier to grip. Originally, each person would hold the rope for the next person; however this has been phased out.

It is quicker than abseiling (rappelling), although more dangerous, particularly if the person is carrying a heavy load, because the rope is not attached to them with a descender. The person holds onto the rope with his gloved hands and feet and slides down it.

Several people can slide down the same rope simultaneously, provided that there is a gap of approximately 3 metres (9.8 ft) between them, so that each one has time to get out of the way when they reach the ground.

The USS Zumwalt DDG-1000 is the first in the next generation multi-mission destroyer

AT FIRST GLANCE, the long-awaited USS Zumwalt looks more like brutalist Soviet architecture than a destroyer in the United States Navy. But despite appearances, this trapezoidal hunk of gray steel was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine, not plucked from a Bulgarian mountaintop.

The Zumwalt completed its first at-sea tests this week, and its captain, who really is named James Kirk, couldn’t be happier. “For the crew and all those involved in designing, building, and readying this fantastic ship, this is a huge milestone,” he says. Bath Iron Works employee Kelley Campana, with tears in her eyes, told the The Telegraph, “It looks like the future.”

After decades and billions of dollars spent, the DoD may instead choose an updated version of the Arleigh-Burke DDG-51 destroyer, a model that entered service in 1991.

Weapons Check - Longbow 64D Apache Helicopter

The AH-64 Apache is the Army's heavy division/corps attack helicopter. The AH-64D Longbow remanufacture effort incorporates a millimeter wave fire control radar, radar frequency interferometer, fire-and-forget radar-guided HELLFIRE missile and cockpit management and digitization enhancements. The combination of the FCR, RFI, and the advanced navigation and avionics suite of the aircraft provide increased situational awareness, lethality and survivability.

The AH-64 Apache has a four-blade main rotor and a four-blade tail rotor. The crew sits in tandem, with the pilot sitting behind and above the copilot/gunner. Both crew members are capable of flying the aircraft and performing methods of weapon engagements independently.

The crew compartment has shielding between the cockpits, such that at least one crew member can survive hits. The compartment and the rotor blades are designed to sustain a hit from 23-millimeter (0.91 in) rounds. The airframe includes some 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg) of protection and has a self-sealing fuel system to protect against ballistic projectiles.

Venomous Vipers Ready to Strike: Prepping F-16s at Bagram Airfield (Interviews)

Airmen from the 455th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance squadron maintain the F-16s at Bagram Airfield.

The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,500 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are still being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.

The Fighting Falcon has key features including a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while maneuvering, a seat reclined 30 degrees to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot, and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system which helps to make it a nimble aircraft. The F-16 has an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and 11 locations for mounting weapons and other mission equipment. The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots and crews, due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as the Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper starfighter.

In addition to active duty for U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the aircraft is also used by the USAF aerial demonstration team, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft by the United States Navy. The F-16 has also been procured to serve in the air forces of 25 other nations. As of 2015, it is the second most common currently operational military aircraft in the world.

A deck gun is a type of naval artillery mounted on the deck of a submarine. Similar unenclosed guns are often found on surface ships as secondary or defensive armament, although the term "deck gun" normally refers only to submarine-mounted guns. Most submarine deck guns were open, however a few larger submarines placed these guns in a turret.

The deck gun was used as a defensive weapon against smaller boats or ships and in certain cases where torpedo use was limited. Typically a crew of three; gunner, loader and layer (pointer, trainer, and loader in the US), operated the gun, while others were tasked with supplying ammunition. A small locker box held a few 'ready-use' rounds. With a well-drilled, experienced crew, the rate of fire of a deck gun could be 15 to 18 aimed shots per minute.

Australian Forces - OPS - RIMPAC 2016

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the military organisation responsible for the defence of Australia. It consists of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Australian Army, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and a number of 'tri-service' units. The ADF has a strength of just over 80,000 full-time personnel and active reservists, and is supported by the Department of Defence and several other civilian agencies.

During the first decades of the 20th century, the Australian Government established the armed services as separate organisations. Each service had an independent chain of command. In 1976, the government made a strategic change and established the ADF to place the services under a single headquarters. Over time, the degree of integration has increased and tri-service headquarters, logistics and training institutions have supplanted many single-service establishments.

The ADF is technologically sophisticated but relatively small. Although the ADF's 57,982 full-time active-duty personnel, 23,232 active reserves and 22,166 standby reserves make it the largest military in Oceania, it is still smaller than most Asian militaries. Nonetheless, the ADF is supported by a significant budget by worldwide standards and is able to deploy forces in multiple locations outside Australia.

Paladin M109A6 155 mm Howitzers

Paladin M109A6 is a cannon artillery system developed by the Ground System Division of United Defense LP (now BAE Systems Land and Armaments) and manufactured at the Paladin Production Operation centre at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Paladin was first fielded in 1994 and is operational with the United States Army and the Israeli Army, and has been selected by the Kuwait and Taiwan.

In June 1999, the US Army received the last of 950 Paladin M109A6 ordered. Seven systems were ordered in July 2000 for the US Army National Guard and a further 18 systems in January 2002.

Paladin artillery system operation

The Paladin artillery system is operated by a crew of four, a commander, driver, gunner and loader. Paladin is able to operate independently with no external technical assistance. The crew are able to receive mission data via a secure voice and digital communications system, compute the firing data, automatically unlock the cannon from the travel lock, point the cannon and fire, and move to a new location without external technical assistance. Paladin M109A6 fires the first round from the move in under 60 seconds. The 'shoot and scoot' capability protects the crew from counterbattery fire.

Eitan 8x8 APC IDF's First Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier

The new Eitan has a weight from 30,000 to 35,000 kg and can carry a total of 12 military personnel including commander, driver and gunner. The vehicle will be fitted with a new generation of active protection system based on the Trophy Active Protection System developed by the Israeli Defense Company Rafael to counter RPG and modern anti-tank missile threats.

Brigadier General Baruch Matzliah, head of the Ministry’s Tank Production Office, said " The Eitan was developed from the experience of Israeli troop during the Israel-Gaza conflict 2014 and the Operation Protective Edge". "This new vehicle will join the fleet of Namer tracked armoured vehicle personnel carrier to offer one of the most advanced, protected wheeled combat vehicle.", he added.

Israeli MOD, said that the Tank Production Office and the Israeli Ground Forces command have just started field tests to control the performances of the vehicle in various conditions.

The Eitan is motorized with a 750 horsepower engine and will be able to reach a 90 km/h road speed. The vehicle will be fitted with an unmanned turret armed with an automatic cannon of 30 or 40 mm.

As many other armies in the world, IDF (Israel Defense Forces) have make the choice to use wheeled armoured vehicle which offers more mobility with a ground pressure considerably higher than that of their tracked armoured counterparts. Modern wheeled combat vehicle also can offer the same level of firepower of main battle tank, as the Italian Centauro which can be armed with a 120mm gun.
