F-15E Strike Eagle Flight over Norway at Arctic Fighter Meet 2016 (Cockpit POV Footage)

F-15E Strike Eagle flying at Low Level Over Norway Footage shot by 492nd and 493rd Fighter Squadrons during Arctic Fighter Meet 2016 (BODØ MAIN AIR STATION, Norway).

The 48th Fighter Wing trained alongside the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish air forces during exercise Arctic Fighter Meet 2016, May 23-27. Seven jets from the 492nd and 493rd Fighter Squadrons were brought to Norway to conduct basic fighter maneuvers with dissimilar aircraft to improve combined air operations.

This training exercise allowed forward-based U.S. Airmen and aircraft from RAF Lakenheath to train with NATO Allies and European partners, building on skill sets and improving every nation's ability to seamlessly work together.

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-15E Strike Eagle is an American all-weather multirole strike fighter, derived from the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. The F-15E was designed in the 1980s for long-range, high speed interdiction without relying on escort or electronic-warfare aircraft. United States Air Force (USAF) F-15E Strike Eagles can be distinguished from other U.S. Eagle variants by darker aircraft camouflage and conformal fuel tanks mounted along the engine intake ramps.

The Strike Eagle has been deployed for military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, among others. During these operations the F-15E has carried out deep strikes against high-value targets, combat air patrols, and provided close air support for coalition troops. It has also been exported to several countries.

F-15 Eagle: The Invincible Tactical Fighter Aircraft (Overview and Capabilities)

The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an American twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) to gain and maintain air supremacy in aerial combat. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas' design in 1967 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter.

The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976. It is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills scored by the Israel Air Force. The Eagle has been exported to Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. The F-15 was originally envisioned as a pure air superiority aircraft. Its design included a secondary ground-attack capability that was largely unused.

The F-15 has an all-metal semi-monocoque fuselage with a large cantilever shoulder-mounted wing. The empennage is metal and composite construction, with twin aluminium/composite material honeycomb structure fins with boron-composite skin, resulting in an exceptionally thin tailplane and rudders with all-moving composite horizontal tail surfaces outboard of the fins. The F-15 has a spine-mounted air brake and retractable tricycle landing gear. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100 Axial compressor turbofan engines with afterburners mounted side-by-side in the fuselage, fed by intake ramps. The cockpit is mounted high in the forward fuselage with a one-piece windscreen and large canopy to increase visibility. The airframe began to incorporate advanced superplastically formed titanium components in the 1980s.

The F-15's maneuverability is derived from low wing loading (weight to wing area ratio) with a high thrust-to-weight ratio enabling the aircraft to turn tightly without losing airspeed. The F-15 can climb to 30,000 ft (10,000 m) in around 60 seconds. The thrust output of the dual engines is greater than the aircraft's weight, thus giving it the ability to accelerate in a vertical climb. The weapons and flight control systems are designed so that one person can safely and effectively perform air-to-air combat.

The A and C-models are single-seat variants; these were the main air superiority versions produced. B and D-models add a second seat behind the pilot for training. E-models use the second seat for a weapon systems officer. Visibly, the F-15 has a unique feature vis-à-vis other modern fighter aircraft: it does not have the distinctive turkey feather aerodynamic exhaust petals covering its engine nozzles. This is because the petal design on the F-15 was problematic and could fall off in flight; therefore they were removed, resulting in a 3% aerodynamic drag increase.

The aircraft design proved flexible enough that an all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed and entered service in 1989. The F-15 Eagle is expected to be in service with the U.S. Air Force past 2025. Newer models are still being produced for foreign users. The F-15 production line is set to end in 2019, 47 years after the type's first flight.

Russian frigate "attacks" US Destroyer in the Eastern Mediterranean (Footage)

A Russian warship, the 4,000-ton Russian frigate Yaroslav Mudry (FF-727), approached within 315 yards of the U.S. Navy warship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea earlier this month in what U.S. officials say was a series of "unsafe maneuvers". The USS Gravely was in the Mediterranean on a routine patrol June 17 to provide protection for the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman as part of Operation Inherent Resolve to counter ISIS. It was approached by the Project 1154 Russian Neustrashimyy-class frigate, according to U.S. officials. The Russian vessel made repeated passes behind the Gravely within its wake. At one point, the Russian ship pointed toward the Truman, the officials said. “Gravely was operating astern of Harry S. Truman, and assessed that 777 was intentionally trying to interfere with Harry S. Truman operations,” the official said, referring to the Russian frigate’s side number. The Gravely eventually accelerated speed and moved ahead, with the Russian ship still following it before breaking off.

For the first time in some years, two US Navy carrier strike groups were active at the same time in the Mediterranean Sea. On June 2, the carrier Harry S. Truman — whose escorts included the Graveley — passed northbound through the Suez Canal and, on the following day, began combat strikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq. The Truman apparently has wrapped up combat operations and was in port at Souda Bay, Crete last weekend. US officials on Tuesday would not confirm the ship’s location, but she is believed to be preparing to return to the US at the end of a seven-month deployment.

The Kremlin claims that was harassed by the U.S. guided missile destroyer, while attempting to disrupt an aircraft carrier tasked with fighting ISIS. It was claimed that as the ships traveled, Mudry’s crew repeatedly warned Gravely over the radio not to get close but kept accelerating and turning into the American destroyer over the 90 minutes it was tailing the destroyer and carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), at one point that the frigate got as close as about 300 yards.

Throughout the incident, Gravely maneuvered to stay between Mudry and Truman, the official said.

The crew of Gravely and the carrier determined the Russian frigate, “was intentionally trying to interfere with Harry S. Truman operations,” as the official said. “We have deep concerns about the unsafe and unprofessional Russian ship maneuvers. These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries, and could result in a miscalculation or accident which results in serious injury or death.”

The incident is the latest in an ongoing series of confrontational military encounters at sea and in the air, and takes place as the US has increased its naval demonstrations in the Mediterranean region.

Darpa & nVidia Virtual Eye: Surveillance Re-Invented (VR Technology Demo)

DARPA, the US military's science fiction arm, thinks that technology could give soldiers and rescuers better situational awareness. Since there's no way personnel can lug a lot of computers and cameras into a battle or a disaster-struck location, it worked with a well established video card manufacturer, NVIDIA, to create Virtual Eye. The system fuses two images into a live synthetic 3D scene using just a powerful laptop and a pair of cameras.

Running on a laptop with a dual NVIDIA K20 GPUs, it fuses the images into a live virtual scene, using extrapolation to fill in the missing pixels. While the images aren't as pretty as Intel's FreeD replays, users get a continuous video feed that they can rotate around in real time, unlike the still images from the replay tech.

RAAF's C-130J Super Hercules Spectacular Flare Drop (Aerial Footage)

Awesome footage of a C-130J Super Hercules flare drop over RAAF Base Richmond conducted on Thursday, June 9 over Hawkesbury Valley.

The lunchtime flare drop, conducted by two C-130J Hercules aircraft was an essential part of aircrew training for pilots and loadmasters from No. 285 Squadron at the base. Flare are part of the Hercules’ defensive systems, and can protect the aircraft from attack by infra-red guided missile.

The drop was part of an intensive block of training from June 8-17  which will see four pilots and two loadmasters complete a six-month program to learn how to fly the Hercules.

Over the final week, the pilots and loadmasters will be assessed on their skills in flying at low-level with the use of night-vision goggles, aerial delivery of cargo, and operating from semi-prepared runways.

Lockheed Martin' s C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. The C-130J is a comprehensive update of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, with new engines, flight deck, and other systems. The Hercules family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 60 years of service, the family has participated in military, civilian, and humanitarian aid operations. The Hercules has outlived several planned successor designs, most notably the Advanced Medium STOL Transport contestants. Fifteen nations have placed orders for a total of 300 C-130Js, of which 250 aircraft have been delivered as of February 2012.

BAE Systems' Python Minefield Breaching System Explosive Fill Upgrade (Promo)

Python comprises a 230m long explosive-filled hose, which is fired into the air by a single rocket to land in a straight line in front of the towing vehicle – the British Army uses BAE Systems’ built Trojan or Terrier® vehicles. The hose then detonates to clear mines from a path at least 200m long and 7m wide. Two devices can also be used in tandem to clear a 400m long path. This world's most advanced minefield breaching / mine clearance system now has an Insensitive Munition explosive fill. This latest version of the British Army’s minefield breaching system, has been successfully fired at the British Army Training Unit Suffield in Canada. The system now uses an Insensitive Munition explosive fill, which makes it resistant to a bullet attack or other impacts that could trigger a detonation as well as improving safety for the user.

Python is also available for training purposes: a re-usable fully inert system that can be utilised with a live rocket and fired where normal safety limitations prohibit the use of high explosives.

Python has been in use for several years – having replaced the earlier Giant Viper System. Giant Viper and Python have been used extensively in conflicts worldwide including Desert Storm and Afghanistan.

US Navy Cruise of Dual Nimitz-Class Aircraft Carriers Strike Groups Aerial Footage

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) & USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Nimitz-Class Aircraft Carriers conduct dual Aircraft Carrier Strike Groups operations in the US 7th Fleet Area Of Operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia Pacific.

The aircraft carriers USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) began dual-carrier flight operations in the Philippine Sea over the weekend, for the first time in about two years.

The ships and aircrafts from both carrier strike groups began coordinated operations in international waters on June 18, “demonstrating the United States’ unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups in close proximity,” according to a Navy news release. The operations included air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishments at sea, long-range strikes and more.

The Nimitz-class supercarriers are a class of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service with the United States Navy. The lead ship of the class is named for World War II United States Pacific Fleet commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Navy's last fleet admiral. With an overall length of 1,092 ft (333 m) and full-load displacement of over 100,000 long tons, they have been the largest warships built and in service, although they are being eclipsed by the upcoming Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h) and maximum power of around 260,000 shp (190 MW). As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years. They are categorized as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and are numbered with consecutive hull numbers between CVN-68 and CVN-77.

All ten carriers were constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia. USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned on 3 May 1975, and USS George H.W. Bush, the tenth and last of the class, was commissioned on 10 January 2009. Since the 1970s, Nimitz-class carriers have participated in many conflicts and operations across the world, including Operation Eagle Claw in Iran, the Gulf War, and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Massive US Aerial Formation: VTOL / V-22 Osprey, CH-53 and AV-8B Harrier landing/takeoff (Footage)

Footage of U.S. Marines and CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters and MV-22 Osprey aircraft. Lifting groups of marines during large training exercises. Also footage of US AV-8B Harrier participating in a deployment for training (DFT) on Tyndall Air Force Base.

The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.

The V-22 originated from the United States Department of Defense Joint-service Vertical take-off/landing Experimental (JVX) aircraft program started in 1981. The team of Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters was awarded a development contract in 1983 for the tiltrotor aircraft. The Bell Boeing team jointly produce the aircraft. The V-22 first flew in 1989, and began flight testing and design alterations; the complexity and difficulties of being the first tiltrotor intended for military service in the world led to many years of development.

The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is the largest and heaviest helicopter in the United States military. As the Sikorsky S-80 it was developed from the CH-53 Sea Stallion, mainly by adding a third engine, adding a seventh blade to the main rotor and canting the tail rotor 20 degrees. It was built by Sikorsky Aircraft for the United States Marine Corps. The less common MH-53E Sea Dragon fills the United States Navy's need for long range minesweeping or Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM) missions, and perform heavy-lift duties for the Navy. Under development is the CH-53K King Stallion, which will be equipped with new engines, new composite material rotor blades, and a wider aircraft cabin.

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a single-engine ground-attack aircraft that constitutes the second generation of the Harrier Jump Jet family. Capable of vertical or short takeoff and landing (V/STOL), the aircraft was designed in the late 1970s as an Anglo-American development of the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the first operational V/STOL aircraft. Named after a bird of prey,[8] it is primarily employed on light attack or multi-role missions, ranging from close air support of ground troops to armed reconnaissance. The AV-8B is used by the United States Marine Corps (USMC), the Spanish Navy, and the Italian Navy. A variant of the AV-8B, the British Aerospace Harrier II, was developed for the British military, while another, the TAV-8B, is a dedicated two-seat trainer.

Boston Dynamics' New SpotMini Robot REVEALED: First Steps and Tests

SpotMini is a new smaller version of the Spot robot, weighing 55 lbs dripping wet (65 lbs if you include its arm.) SpotMini is all-electric (no hydraulics) and runs for about 90 minutes on a charge, depending on what it is doing. SpotMini is one of the quietest robots we have ever built. It has a variety of sensors, including depth cameras, a solid state gyro (IMU) and proprioception sensors in the limbs. These sensors help with navigation and mobile manipulation. SpotMini performs some tasks autonomously, but often uses a human for high-level guidance.

Boston Dynamics, one of the leaders in commercial robot design, have unveiled their latest invention: the SpotMini. This robot is one of their smallest and most agile robots yet, and is designed to navigate and work in tight household environments.

The SpotMini is modeled after dogs (hence the name Spot) and has a fully articulated arm that extends off its back. The arm is sensitive enough to handle glassware, as shown in the video when Spot takes a glass from the sink and puts it in the dishwasher. The other marvel of its arm is the solid state gyro, which allows the end of the arm to stay almost perfectly still while the body moves in all manner of directions.

The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) notified Nexter Systems of the Leclerc tank renovation contract. This order constitutes the third operation launched by the French Ministry of Defence under the SCORPION programme intended to modernise the French Army's contact forces. Valued at approximately €330 million, the contract provides for the delivery of 200 "Renovated Leclerc" tanks and 18 "Renovated DCL" recovery vehicles from 2020.

The planned renovation work will enable the Leclerc to make the best use of its fire power and mobility within future "SCORPION" joint tactical groups (GTIA). Thanks to the development of specific interfaces for the new CONTACT tactical radio system and the SCORPION information and command system (SICS), it will be able to effectively network with all components of future "SCORPION" GTIAs. Moreover, the upgrade of its protection through the development of specific armour kits will enable the Leclerc tank to deal more effectively with new threats, such as improvised explosive devices.

A 3rd generation tank with a high degree of automation and diagnostic assistance, the Leclerc tank currently gives the French land forces "first entry" capability as part of an international coalition. The renovation operation launched aims to maintain this capacity beyond 2040.

The Char Leclerc is a main battle tank (MBT) built by GIAT, now Nexter of France. It was named in honour of General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque who led the French element of the drive towards Paris while in command of the Free French 2nd Armoured Division (2ème DB) in World War II.

TALON: U.S. Army's all-terrain multi-functional Robots (Overview and Capabilities)

The Foster-Miller TALON remotely operated vehicle is a small, tracked military robot designed for missions ranging from reconnaissance to combat. Foster-Miller claims the TALON is one of the fastest robots in production, one that can travel through sand, water, and snow as well as climb stairs. The TALON transmits in color, black and white, infrared, and/or night vision to its operator, who may be up to 1,000 m away. It can run off lithium-ion batteries for a maximum of 7 days on standby independently before needing recharging. It has an 8.5 hour battery life at normal operating speeds, 2 standard lead batteries providing 2 hours each and 1 optional Lithium Ion providing an additional 4.5 hours. It can also withstand repeated decontamination allowing it to work for long periods of time in contaminated areas. It was used in Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks working for 45 days with many decontaminations without electronic failure. This led to the further development of the HAZMAT TALON.

It weighs less than 100 lb (45 kg) or 60 lb (27 kg) for the Reconnaissance version. Its cargo bay accommodates a variety of sensor payloads. The robot is controlled through a two-way radio or a Fiber-optic link from a portable or wearable Operator Control Unit (OCU) that provides continuous data and video feedback for precise vehicle positioning.

Regular (IED/EOD) TALON: Carries sensors and a robotic manipulator, which is used by the U.S. Military for explosive ordnance disposal and disarming improvised explosive devices.

Special Operations TALON (SOTAL): Does not have the robotic arm manipulator but carries day/night color cameras and listening devices; lighter due to the absence of the arm, for reconnaissance missions.

SWORDS TALON: For small arms combat and guard roles. Tested in December 2003 in Kuwait prior to deployment in Iraq.

HAZMAT TALON: Uses chemical, gas, temperature, and radiation sensors that are displayed in real time to the user on a hand-held display unit. It is now being tested by the US Armament Research Development and Engineering Center ARDEC.

The robot costs approximately $60,000 in its standard form. Foster-Miller was subsequently bought out by QinetiQ, a United Kingdom military developer.

In military, law enforcement and first responder applications, these lightweight tracked vehicles are widely deployed for improvised explosive device (IED) and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), reconnaissance, communications, CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive)/hazmat, security, heavy lift, defense and rescue missions.Large enough to get the job done, yet small enough to be easily transported, the TALON is a remarkable achievement in robotic technology.

The TALON is fast and mobile, able to climb stairs, negotiate rock piles, overcome concertina wire and plow through snow. The robots have been used worldwide, from Ground Zero after the 2001 World Trade Center attack, to IRAQ and Afghanistan, searching for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect and assisting with security during major sporting events.

RAF's Thunder God: BAE Systems' Taranis Drone Development (Interview)

RAF drones currently being built could kill without the need for human decision-making. The drone, named Taranis after the Celtic god of thunder, is currently being developed and tested by BAE Systems for both the British and French militaries.

The aircraft was designed to demonstrate the UK’s ability to create an unmanned air system which, under the control of a human operator, is capable of undertaking sustained surveillance, marking targets, gathering intelligence, deterring adversaries and carrying out strikes in hostile territory.

The findings from the aircraft’s test flights show that the UK has developed a significant lead in understanding unmanned aircraft which could strike with precision over a long range whilst remaining undetected.

The technological advances made through Taranis will also help the UKMOD and Royal Air Force make decisions on the future mix of manned and unmanned fast jet aircraft and how they will operate together in a safe and effective manner for the UK’s defences.

Costing £185 million and funded jointly by the UK MOD and UK industry, the Taranis demonstrator aircraft was formally unveiled in July 2010.

Initial ‘power-up’ or ground testing commenced later in 2010 at BAE Systems’ military aircraft factory in Warton, Lancashire followed by a comprehensive and highly detailed programme of pre-first flight milestones. These included unmanned pilot training, radar cross section measurements, ground station system integration and, in April 2013 taxi trials on the runway at Warton.

Taranis has now undergone a series of succesful flight trials and the team continues to develop the aircrafts capability.

ONE TEAM: U.S. Navy & Marines Combined - The Most Powerful Amphibious Force of All Time

The United States Navy and United States Marine Corps amphibious team represents the most powerful amphibious force of all time, with the world's most effective ships, aircraft, vehicles, weapons, and personnel to get the job done. In this in depth info-video, we see the numbers of how the Navy and Marine Corps combine their unique assets to create this winning team.

The largest of all amphibious warfare ships; resembles a small aircraft carrier; capable of Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL), Short Take-Off Vertical Landing (STOVL), Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor and Rotary Wing (RW) aircraft operations; contains a well deck to support use of Landing Craft, Air Cushioned (LCAC) and other watercraft (with exception of the first two LHA(R) class ships, LHA 6 and LHA 7, which have no well deck). LHA 8 will feature a well deck.

Background:
Amphibious warships are designed to support the Marine Corps tenets of Operational Maneuver From the Sea (OMFTS) and Ship to Objective Maneuver (STOM). They must be capable of sailing in harm's way and enable rapid combat power buildup ashore in the face of opposition. Because of their inherent capabilities, these ships have been and will continue to be called upon to also support humanitarian and other contingency missions on short notice. The United States maintains the largest and most capable amphibious force in the world.

The Wasp-class LHDs are currently the largest amphibious ships in the world. The lead ship, USS Wasp (LHD 1) was commissioned in July 1989 in Norfolk, Va. The delivery of LHA Replacement or LHA(R) America class ships is the next step in the incremental development of the "Big Deck Amphib." American-class ships are designed to accommodate the Marine Corps' future Air Combat Element (ACE) including F-35B Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and MV-22 Osprey with additional aviation maintenance capability and increased fuel capacities, while also providing additional cargo stowage capacities and enabling a broader, more flexible Command and Control capability.

U.S. Marines - Light Attack Training Squadron 303 provide close air support from a UH-1Y Huey

A training exercise northeast of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., Feb. 12, 2013. where Marines with Marine Light Attack Training Squadron 303 provide close air support from a UH-1Y Huey helicopter. During the training exercise the crew of the UH-1Y fire the GAU-21 .50 caliber machine gun and an M134 minigun at simulated targets in the California desert.

In military tactics, close air support (CAS) is defined as air action by fixed or rotary-winged aircraft against hostile targets, that are in close proximity to friendly forces, and which requires detailed integration of each air mission with fire and movement of these forces.

The requirement for detailed integration because of proximity, fires or movement is the determining factor. CAS may need to be conducted during shaping operations with Special Operations Forces (SOF), if the mission requires detailed integration with the fire and movement of these forces. A closely related subset of air interdiction, battlefield air interdiction (AI) denotes interdiction against units with near-term effects on friendly units, but which does not require integration with friendly troop movements. The term battlefield "air interdiction" is not currently used in U.S. joint doctrine.

Close air support requires excellent coordination with ground forces. In advanced modern militaries, this coordination is typically handled by specialists such as Joint Fires Observers (JFO)s, Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC)s, and Forward Air Controllers (FAC)s.

DARPA - Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) Phase 2 Combat Simulation

The U.S. military’s investments in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have proven invaluable for missions ranging from intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) to tactical strike, but most current systems demand continuous control by a dedicated pilot and sensor operator supported by numerous telemetry-linked analysts. This requirement severely limits the scalability and cost-effectiveness of UAS operations and compounds the operational challenges posed by dynamic, remote engagements against highly mobile targets in contested electromagnetic environments.

DARPA’s Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) program aims to overcome these limitations with new algorithms and software for existing unmanned aircraft that would extend mission capabilities and improve U.S. forces’ ability to conduct operations in denied or contested airspace. CODE researchers seek to create a modular software architecture beyond the current state of the art that is resilient to bandwidth limitations and communications disruptions yet compatible with existing standards and amenable to affordable retrofit into existing platforms.

CODE intends to focus in particular on developing and demonstrating improvements in collaborative autonomy—the capability of groups of UAS to work together under a single person’s supervisory control. The unmanned vehicles would continuously evaluate their own states and environments and present recommendations for coordinated UAS actions to a mission supervisor, who would approve or disapprove such team actions and direct any mission changes. Using collaborative autonomy, CODE-enabled unmanned aircraft would find targets and engage them as appropriate under established rules of engagement, leverage nearby CODE-equipped systems with minimal supervision, and adapt to dynamic situations such as attrition of friendly forces or the emergence of unanticipated threats.

CODE’s envisioned improvements to collaborative autonomy would help transform UAS operations from requiring multiple operators for each UAS to having one mission commander simultaneously directing all of the unmanned vehicles required for the mission. Commanders could mix and match different systems with specific capabilities to suit individual missions instead of depending on a single UAS with integrated capabilities, the loss of which would be potentially catastrophic. This flexibility could significantly increase the mission- and cost-effectiveness of legacy assets, reduce development times and costs for future systems, and enable new deployment concepts.

The program plans to develop the operational concepts for CODE-enabled strike missions and validate their effectiveness through detailed modeling and simulation. It also intends to develop the most promising capabilities and demonstrate them in flight using multiple surrogate UAS equipped with mesh network radios and a variety of payloads, augmented by a number of virtual UAS.

Patria - Amos & Nemo 120mm Advanced Mortar Systems

The Finnish arms manufacturer shows off its two 120mm unmanned mortar systems Patria AMOS & NEMO Advanced Mortar Systems.

AMOS or Advanced Mortar System is a 120 mm automatic twin barrelled, breech loaded mortar turret. AMOS has been fitted to a wide range of armoured vehicles, such as the Sisu Pasi, Patria AMV and Combat Vehicle 90. The Swedish Navy originally planned to fit AMOS to the CB90 assault craft, but found that it was too small to carry it. Instead, a project to develop the larger Combat Boat 2010 was launched specifically to carry AMOS.

NEMO (from "new mortar"), is a single barrelled 120 mm unmanned mortar turret currently being developed by Patria Weapons System Oy (PWS) in Finland. It is a lighter version of the AMOS mortar system, which is also being field tested. The NEMO can be fitted to most APCs and also to smaller landing craft, such as the Finnish Jurmo class landing craft or the Swedish Combat Boat 90.

The first customer of the weapon system was the Slovenian Army, which ordered 24, while the United Arab Emirates Naval Forces bought 12 patrol boats, where some were to be equipped with NEMO mortars. Saudi Arabia bought 36 turrets to equip its LAV II vehicles.

Legendary French Foreign Legion and US Marines -Famas- SMAW -M4- Machine Gun

They are all recruited under contract; the first contract is signed as a legionnaire 2nd class.

The French foreign Legion is the military aspect of the ancient tradition of welcome and integration into French society. Authorized to recruit foreigners from all over the world, the Legion must then train and form these men to live, work and eventually fight together as a closely homogenous and tightly knit group. Since the creation of the Legion in 1831, more than 36.000 legionnaires have been killed in action for their adopted homeland.

The unique singularity of the Legion takes root in its capacity to animate and maintain this specific state of mind which permits the ultimate and unusual sacrifice. Thus, the membership and sharing of these common values forges the souls of legionnaires. The discipline, the sacredness of the mission, the search for excellence, mutual respect and solidarity form the heart of its “honor code”, illustrated by the inscription on the colors of the French foreign Legion: Honor – Fidelity.

With such a diversified human resource, this deep membership to clearly defined traditions, makes possible, the building of a modern fully operational troop which has adapted itself since its creation, to the evolutions of the French armies.

The exceptional nature of the men which the Legion recruits imposes centralized, autonomous and adapted responsibilities of command. The COM.LE (Foreign Legion Command), guarantor of the status “à titre étranger” is mindful that the close links of mutual confidence woven daily between legionnaires and their commanders remains the source of an unwavering “esprit de corps”, guaranteeing  the fidelity of foreigners in the service of France.

Northrop Grumman's IBCS Fire Tests: U.S. IAMD Destroying Cruise & Ballistic Missiles (Footage)

On April 8, 2016 U.S. Army soldiers executed a successful flight test of the Northrop Grumman Corporation-developed Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Battle Command System (IBCS) to identify, track, engage and defeat ballistic and cruise missile targets.‬

Building upon previous successful flight tests, the April 8 event validated the ability of IBCS to manage multiple threats. The test included joint sensors providing data to the IBCS engagement operations center to augment Army sensor data for a single integrated air picture, and the IBCS selecting from different missile types to defeat multiple threats arriving at the same time.

The IBCS utilized sensors and interceptors from different air defense systems connected at the component level to operate on the IBCS integrated fire control network. Using tracking data from Sentinel and Patriot radars, the IBCS provided the command-and-control (C2) for a Patriot Advanced Capability Three (PAC-3) interceptor to destroy a ballistic missile target and a PAC-2 interceptor to destroy a cruise missile target.

Additionally, the IBCS flight test architecture included the Marine Corps Tactical Air Operations Module for joint C2 situational awareness. Air defenders from Fort Bliss, Texas, conducted all IBCS operations as part of the Limited User Test system evaluation ahead of a Milestone C decision later this year.

Foundational to IAMD transformation and key to the Army IAMD portfolio, the IBCS is managed by the IAMD Project Office, Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

IBCS replaces seven legacy C2 systems to deliver a single integrated air picture and offer the flexibility to deploy smaller force packages. By networking sensors and interceptors, IBCS provides wider area surveillance and broader protection areas. With its truly open systems architecture, IBCS enables integration of current and future sensors and weapon systems and interoperability with joint C2 and the ballistic missile defense system.
