Soldiers from 101st receive an opportunity to go through Jungle Warfare School in Ghana with the Ghana Armed Forces as their instructors during United Accord 2017. United Accord 2017 is the fifth annual, multinational exercise hosted by U.S. Army Africa in the western region of Africa. Until 2017, the exercise was formerly known as "Western Accord."
United Accord 2017 included three distinct components designed to train Soldiers from entry-level enlisted to the high-profile senior commanders. From May 19 to 30, service members completed a command post exercise, field training exercise, and jungle warfare school.
The Ghana Armed Forces taught U.S. Soldiers various tactics to help survive and fight in the jungle under harsh conditions. Soldiers experienced improvised river crossing, an obstacle course, day/night jungle land navigation, emergency & medical precautions, survival skills and procuring sustenance by hunting wildlife and identifying edible plants.
The 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles") is an elite modular specialized light infantry division of the United States Army trained for air assault operations. It is the most potent and tactically mobile of the U.S. Army's divisions, and has been referred to as "the tip of the spear." The 101st Airborne at a moment's notice is able to plan, coordinate, and execute brigade-size air assault operations capable of seizing key terrain in support of operational objectives, and is capable of working in austere environments with limited or degraded infrastructure. These particular operations are conducted by highly mobile teams and they are quite often executed behind enemy lines. Its unique battlefield mobility and high level of training have kept the Division in the vanguard of America's land combat forces in recent conflicts. More recently, the 101st Airborne has been performing foreign internal defense and counter-terrorism operations within Iraq and Afghanistan.
The 101st is the world's only air assault division, capable, in a single lift, of a 4,000-man combined-arms air assault 150 kilometers into enemy territory. It is supported by more than 280 helicopters. This includes three battalions of Apache attack helicopters. At times, additional air assets are assigned to the 101st Airborne during deployment. The 101st Airborne also comprises intelligence support, maintenance and operations elements, support personnel, and artillery specialists. Assisting the 101st Airborne Division is an extensive array of support elements, equipment, and training resources.The 101st is considered a very versatile, very flexible, and a fast-moving unit. The 101st has the capability to move long distances. The 101st can put soldiers down on top of mountains, ridge lines, and behind the enemy forces and can sling-load in artillery pieces for indirect fire. It is considered a unit of choice and it has the ability to secure bridge sites, airfields, and to assist in the combined arms capability for other units.

By the mid-20th century, the U.S. Marine Corps had become a major theorist of and the world's dominant practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its ability to rapidly respond on short notice to expeditionary crises gives it a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 conducted underwater egress survival training to maintain combat readiness at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 28.
The Marines used a simulated helicopter body while training for different underwater escape scenarios as a qualification to be attached to a Marine Expeditionary Unit.
“There were three stages to the exercise,” said Pfc. Connor Bunch, a helicopter mechanic with the unit. “We had classroom training, Shallow Water Egress Training, and the [Modular Amphibious Egress Trainer] in the deep end.”
The classes covered basic water safety, use of the equipment, and hands-on training and emergency procedures since it was the first time many of these Marines conducted the Modular Amphibious Egress Trainer and SWET.
The SWET is a small, enclosed, chair with buoys that represents a cockpit of an aircraft. It flips Marines upside down in the water, allowing them to practice escaping by pushing through a side window of a sunken aircraft.
After Marines showed proficiency in the shallow water training, they advanced to the deep end of the pool.
Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, the core of the Amphibious Ready Element, commence integration training at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii as part of Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016.
Twenty-seven nations, 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific exercise scheduled, June 30 - Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and southern California.
As the world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

Guam Army National Guard Soldiers are among the 2,500 soldiers assembled at Camp Roberts, California to participate in this year’s Exportable Combat Training Capability (XCTC). In the video, you will see Guam Army National Guard soldiers in the 1-294th Infantry Regiment take part in M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System training at XCTC.
XCTC is a portable combat training center rotation that can be moved from any state or location that has the capability to support a brigade size element of 2,000 Soldiers and provide platoon and squad sized evaluations.
The M110 Semi Automatic Sniper System (M110 SASS) is an American semi-automatic sniper rifle/designated marksman rifle that is chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO round, developed by U.S. firearm manufacturer Knight's Armament Company. The M110 is to be replaced by the lighter and more compact Heckler & Koch G28.
The nature of modern asymmetrical warfare means confronting the difficulties of combat in dense urban areas. The Israel Defense Forces built the Urban Warfare Training Center so that they could learn to operate effectively against an enemy operating within civilian populations.
The IDF's Urban Warfare Training Center (UWTC) trains special units and armies from all over the world in urban warfare with a variety of simulations.
UWTC founded in 2006 in IDF base Ze'elim, is the world's largest urban warfare training facility. The facility is spread out over 41,000 square meters and includes over 600 structures such as mosques, eight-story buildings and underground passageways.
Comparable only to that of the U.S., the mock city is commonly used to train for the West Bank or the Gaza Strip.
The center also simulates a variety of civilian centers including markets, alleys, refugee camps, kasbahs and even tunnels. Buildings such as schools are not detailed since IDF forces would refrain from entering them.
The facility allows for training in laser-shooting and subsequent investigations of shots (where they were coming from, for example) using an advanced system of sensors.
UWTC also employs a system that monitors the location of each soldier, enabling recognition and improvement of flaws, thus minimizing casualties on both sides.

The Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) is a training system that provides a realistic battlefield environment for soldiers involved in training exercises. MILES provides tactical engagement simulation for direct fire force-on-force training using eye safe laser "bullets".
Individual soldiers carry small laser receivers scattered over their bodies, which detect when the soldier has been illuminated by a firearm's laser. Each laser transmitter is set to mimic the effective range of the weapon on which it is used. When a person is "hit", a medic can use the digital readout to determine which first aid method to practice.
Different versions of MILES systems are available to both US and international militaries. The capabilities of the individual systems can vary significantly but in general all modern systems carry information about the shooter, weapon and ammunition in the laser. When this information is received by the target, the target's MILES system uses a random number roll and a casualty probability lookup table to determine the outcome. For example, a MILES transmitter emulating an M16 rifle cannot harm an armored personnel carrier (APC), but could still "kill" a commander visible in the hatch of the vehicle.
Vehicles are typically outfitted with a belt of laser sensors or individual wireless detectors. Dismounted soldiers often wear a vest or harness with sensors as well as a 'halo' of sensors on their helmets. MILES systems can be coupled with a real-time data link allowing position and event data to be transmitted back to a central site for data collection and display. More sophisticated systems for tanks and APCs exist that use various techniques (including scanning lasers and coupled radio systems) to allow more precise targeting of armored vehicles.
The standard is maintained by the U.S. Army's PEO-STRI branch.
Each individual and vehicle in the training exercise has a detection system to sense hits and perform casualty assessment. Laser transmitters are attached to each individual and vehicle weapon system and accurately replicate actual ranges and lethality of the specific weapon systems.
MILES training has been proven to dramatically increase the combat readiness and fighting effectiveness of military forces.
Soldiers use MILES devices primarily during force-on-force exercises, from squad through brigade level, to simulate the firing and effects of actual weapons systems. These weapons systems include the M1 Abrams Tank, Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle, M113 Armored Personnel Carrier, wheeled vehicles and other non-shooting targets. Additionally, Basic MILES simulations address anti-armor weapons, machine guns, rifles, and other ancillary items, such as a controller gun, within the program.
MILES requires the sound of a blank cartridge to discharge a laser transmitter that sends simulated laser "bullet" to kill or wound opposing forces (OPForces) during training exercises. The MILES fires coded laser beams at laser detectors attached to soldiers or vehicles. When the laser bear hits a detector, the laser detector records a kill or near miss. The detectors are sensitive to the source of fire. For example, the laser beam for a soldier simulating the firing an M16 rifle will not register on a detector mounted on an armored vehicle. Blank firing attachments (BFAs) were developed to promote realism by enabling soldiers to simulate firing their weapons as they are actually used on the battlefield.

Critical Skills Operators with U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, conduct Advanced Sniper training at an undisclosed location. This video includes footage of MARSOC Snipers conducting fundamental sniper skills, sniper tactics and employment, foreign weapons handling, unknown distance and aerial shooting.
The MARSOF Advanced Sniper Course is a four week advanced course designed to train MARSOC snipers in performing advanced sniping in support of MARSOC operations in accordance with Special Operations sniper training standards, and the MARSOF Training and Readiness manual. Individual students will be trained and certified as MARSOC Advanced Snipers.
The four week course is broken down into progressive training blocks:
Block 1: Fundamental skills, Ballistics, and live fire at 100-200meters.
Block 2: Ballistic software, sniper equipment, engagement techniques, known distance shooting, and equipment practical application.
Block 3: Sniper Tactics and employment, foreign weapons, ballistic testing, Glass shooting, Unknown distance shooting (day and night) with 5.56LR, 7.62LR, .300WM, and .50 Caliber rifles, and moving target shooting.
Block 4: Qualification on the MASC qualification course, a composite score based off of four separate and timed drills including barricade shooting, day and night unknown distance, and spotter qualification.
Block 5: Aerial sniping, Explosive loophole breaching, Loophole shooting, Side prone shooting, High angle shooting, Urban hides, Vehicle hides, Surveillance equipment practical application, and the culminating exercise; a four day reactive scenario in which sniper teams locate targets, conduct surveillance, and eliminate targets as part of a Marine Special Operations Team, utilizing the full spectrum of SOF assets and equipment.
The Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Individual Training Course trains Marines in 4 phases, all which require focus, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to mission success.
Becoming a MARSOC Operator isn’t easy - the MARSOC Assessment and Selection is just the beginning. Candidates who have been successfully selected will be assigned to an Individual Training Course (ITC) class. The ITC is a physically and mentally challenging 7-month course designed to produce MARSOC Critical Skills Operators (CSOs) who can operate across the spectrum of special operations in small teams under spartan conditions. ITC uses a building block approach; the training rigor will systematically increase to mimic the complexity and stresses of combat. During ITC students are under constant observation from the instructor cadre as well as their peers. ITC is broken down into four training phases:
Phase 1 – (Basic Skills) 10 Weeks: Phase 1 trains and evaluates students in the basic skill sets required of all special operators. Physical fitness, swimming and hand-to-hand combat are stressed in a PT program designed around endurance, functional fitness and amphibious training. This physical training program will continue throughout the course and has been designed to prepare the student for the unique demands of special operations. Field skills including: navigation, patrolling, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE), Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). Mission planning, Fire support training and Communications round out the first phase.
Phase 2 – (Small Unit Tactics) 8 Weeks: Phase 2 builds upon the foundation of Phase 1, training the student in small boat and scout swimmer operations, crew served weapons, demolitions, photography and information collection and reporting. Students will be evaluated in two Full Mission Profile exercises “Operation Raider Spirit”, a 2 week exercise focused on patrolling and combat operations, and “Operation Stingray Fury” focused on urban and rural reconnaissance.
Phase 3 – (Close Quarters Battle) 5 Weeks: Student will be trained in rifle and pistol combat marksmanship and will then learn the tactics, techniques and procedures need to serve as a member of a Marine Special Operations Team during assault operations. This Phase culminates in a series of full mission profile precision raids on rural and urban objectives during “Operation Guile Strike”.
Phase 4 – (Irregular Warfare) 7 Weeks: In the final phase, students will receive instruction on Irregular Warfare operations. The course culminates with “Operation Derna Bridge”. Derna Bridge will require the student to use all of the skills mastered throughout the course while training, advising and operating with a Partner Nation / Irregular force. Newly graduated MARSOF CSO’s will be assigned to one of the three Marine Special Operations Battalions.
