The M1 Abrams is an American third-generation main battle tank. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army chief of staff and commander of United States military forces in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. Highly mobile, designed for modern armored ground warfare, the M1 is well armed and heavily armored. Notable features include the use of a powerful multifuel turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. Weighing nearly 68 short tons (almost 62 metric tons), it is one of the heaviest main battle tanks in service.

The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the M60 tank. The M1 remains the principal main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Iraq.

Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection, and electronics. These improvements and other upgrades to in-service tanks have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. In addition, development for the improved M1A3 version was reported in 2009.

Description: The Chinese DF-ZF Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV), dubbed WU-14, is a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile delivery vehicle designed to penetrate the United States ballistic missile defenses. The HGV payload is launched as the final stage of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The HGV hypersonic vehicle is capable of speeds between Mach 5 (+6,000 kilometers per hour) and Mach 10 (+12,000 kilometers per hour) at altitudes of up to 62 miles (100 kilometers). An hypersonic cruise missile can perform precision strikes with relative low altitude and flat trajectory which makes it difficult to detect and neutralize by conventional air and missile defenses. The first test of the new weapon was carried out over China on January 9, 2014. The Chinese Global Times reported that the maximum speed achieved by the WU-14 during the test was actually Mach 20 instead of Mach 10 as reported by the United States. The weapon was re-named DF-ZF in November 2015.

Team USA participate in Strong Europe Tank Challenge 2017 (B-Roll, Live Fire Footage and Interviews)

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment competed in the Strong Europe Tank Challenge 2017. 1st Bn., 66th Armor Regt., had the opportunity to participate in a multinational competition while rotating through the European theater as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Competitors from Austria, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and the U.S. battled it out to claim the prize of being called the best tank crew in Europe.

U.S. Army Europe and the German Army co-host the Strong Europe Tank Challenge at Grafenwoehr Training Area, May 7-12, 2017.

Platoons from six NATO and partner nations are scheduled to take part in the challenge. The participants are: Austria, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.

Participating units will be tested on offensive and defensive operations as well as tasks including vehicle identification, battle damage assessment and precision maneuvers.

The Strong Europe Tank Challenge is designed to project a dynamic presence, foster military partnership, promote interoperability, and provides an environment for sharing tactics, techniques and procedures.
