They are all recruited under contract; the first contract is signed as a legionnaire 2nd class.
The French foreign Legion is the military aspect of the ancient tradition of welcome and integration into French society. Authorized to recruit foreigners from all over the world, the Legion must then train and form these men to live, work and eventually fight together as a closely homogenous and tightly knit group. Since the creation of the Legion in 1831, more than 36.000 legionnaires have been killed in action for their adopted homeland.
The unique singularity of the Legion takes root in its capacity to animate and maintain this specific state of mind which permits the ultimate and unusual sacrifice. Thus, the membership and sharing of these common values forges the souls of legionnaires. The discipline, the sacredness of the mission, the search for excellence, mutual respect and solidarity form the heart of its “honor code”, illustrated by the inscription on the colors of the French foreign Legion: Honor – Fidelity.
With such a diversified human resource, this deep membership to clearly defined traditions, makes possible, the building of a modern fully operational troop which has adapted itself since its creation, to the evolutions of the French armies.
The exceptional nature of the men which the Legion recruits imposes centralized, autonomous and adapted responsibilities of command. The COM.LE (Foreign Legion Command), guarantor of the status “à titre étranger” is mindful that the close links of mutual confidence woven daily between legionnaires and their commanders remains the source of an unwavering “esprit de corps”, guaranteeing the fidelity of foreigners in the service of France.
